Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon saga drags on with Scargiver trailer
Netflix's Rebel Moon—Part Two: Scargiver trailer reminds us that Part 1 somehow gets a sequel that releases in April
Say what you will about Zack Snyder, the man loves to craft multiple movies out of a single idea, whether 300 or Army Of The Dead. The latest victim is Netflix’s Rebel Moon, his critically panned 2023 space saga that somehow snagged a continuation—even if the director’s math of millions of people watching part one isn’t necessarily accurate. Think of it as his own little SnyderVerse because Rebel Moon—Part Two: Scargiver is almost here.
As a refresher, because everyone needs it even if the movie dropped only four months ago, Rebel Moon is set in a fictional galaxy ruled by—wait for it—The Motherworld. Their imperialistic military, the Imperium, endangers a peaceful farming colony on the moon Veldt. A former soldier, Kora (Sofia Boutella), decides to fight back. She goes on a quest to recruit warriors from around the cosmos to form a team. In Scargiver, the crew prepares for war and sacrifices for Veldt, which becomes a safe space for those with nowhere else to go. Whew.
The trailer is Peak Snyder, so there are intense fight scenes, an epic scope, and a shit ton of CGI. As for what’s happening narratively, it’s hard to decipher, but the villainous Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) reminds us more than once that Kora is the titular Scargiver, and he’s ready to combat with her to win.
Alright, another thing to say about Snyder is the director sure knows how to assemble a stacked cast. Scargiver also features Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Michael Huisman, Cary Elwes, Charlie Hunnam, Corey Stoll, Staz Nair, and Anthony Hopkins. As with part one, Snyder co-wrote the script with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten.
It’s TBD if the team will still unleash the three-hour cut of Rebel Moon, but they have plans to grow the franchise further. Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2023 that he expects to work on a graphic novel, a podcast, and a photo book before eventually getting to a third film. If he has his way, he’ll turn it into a “trilogy of sequels,” whatever that means.
For now, Rebel Moon—Part Two: Scargiver arrives on Netflix on April 19.
