Jeremy Strong, Daniel Radcliffe, and Sufjan Stevens' new musical were all nominated for Tony Awards this year
Other Hollywood representation includes nods for Sarah Paulson, Rachel McAdams, Eddie Redmayne, Jonathan Groff, and Alicia Keys' Hell's Kitchen
The 2024 Tony Award nominees were announced this morning, but from a quick skim of the list, you’d be forgiven for assuming it was the Oscars, or even the Grammys. Even with 36 shows vying for awards this season, there’s a lot of Hollywood representation on the Great White Way.
Let’s look at the Best Leading Actress In A Play category, for example: two-time Oscar winner Jessica Lange was nominated for her work in Mother Play, along with eight-time Emmy nominee Sarah Paulson (Appropriate) and Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams (Mary Jane). They’re joined by Oscar nominee Amy Ryan (Doubt: A Parable) and stage actor Betsy Aidem (Prayer For The French Republic). That race is sure to be just as competitive as Lead Actress at this year’s Oscars.
Alicia Keys also had a great morning. Her new show, Hell’s Kitchen, leads the pack with 13 nominations, including Best New Musical—arguably the ceremony’s marquee category—and four acting nods. Her fellow music industry veteran, Sufjan Stevens, didn’t do too bad for himself either. Illinoise, the new show adapted from his seminal 2005 album, scored four nominations, also including Best New Musical. Other shows in that category include S.E. Hinton adaptation The Outsiders, high-flying circus show Water For Elephants, and women’s movement celebration Suffs.
And those still aren’t the only major stage-and-screen names that will be gracing Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater this year. (For those of you following along at home, this is the second consecutive year that the ceremony won’t be held at its frequent home of Radio City Music Hall.) Jonathan Groff and Eddie Redmayne both scored Best Leading Actor In A Musical nominations for Merrily We Roll Along and Cabaret respectively. Groff’s co-star, Daniel Radcliffe, was also nominated for Best Featured Actor In A Musical. Other notable nominees include Leslie Odom Jr., Liev Schreiber, Jim Parsons, and Cheers alum and Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth. Succession’s Jeremy Strong and The Good Place’s William Jackson Harper also both nabbed nominations for An Enemy Of The People and Uncle Vanya, respectively, although their famous co-stars, Michael Imperioli and Steve Carell, came up short.
This year’s Tony Awards ceremony—hosted by Ariana DeBose—will take place June 16. Scroll on for the full list of nominees:
