A documentary that will try to explain Eyes Wide Shut is in the works

Stanley Kubrick movies are usually widely beloved and critically acclaimed, but they’re also occasionally weird and confusing. Eyes Wide Shut in particular is famously weird and confusing, and now filmmaker Tony Zierra—the director behind Filmworker, which is about Kubrick’s assistant Leon Vitali—has told Variety that his next project will be a documentary dedicated to trying to make sense out of Eyes Wide Shut. “Many people ‘just don’t get it,” he tells Variety, adding, “It makes no sense to them. The casting doesn’t make any sense to them. The story doesn’t make any sense to them.”

Eyes Wide Shut stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, and though it includes various twists and turns, it’s largely about Cruise’s strange adventures in and around a mysterious and exclusive orgy. Kubrick died while the movie was in post-production, adding to the fact that a lot of people didn’t really know what to make of it when it came out. Zierra’s film—currently titled SK13 as Eyes Wide Shut was Kubrick’s 13th movie—will hopefully explain some of the nuances of those strange adventures and shed some light on what it all means, but hopefully it’ll do it without descending into inexplicably dull conspiracy theories like that other documentary that tried to explain a Kubrick movie.
