ABC has removed The Mayor from office
According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC has decided to cancel new comedy series The Mayor despite ordering three backup scripts and leaving four episodes unaired. The show was set to return this month, but its slot will now be filled by Modern Family reruns. All of that seems to indicate that ABC lost confidence in The Mayor fairly recently, though THR notes that its ratings have dipped since its premiere, bleeding a lot of viewers from its Black-ish lead-in and averaging 2.45 million total viewers—a number THR describes as “paltry” due to the fact that it airs opposite This Is Us, NBC’s beloved show about constantly wondering when the characters you like will die.
The Mayor, which was executive produced by Daveed Diggs, starred Brandon Michael Hall as a rapper who is unexpectedly elected the mayor of his town. Hulu had a special streaming deal for The Mayor, and the show is expected to be “shopped elsewhere,” so it might find new life on the streaming service at some point.
