Anne Hathaway in talks to star in next film from Mudbound's Dee Rees

Mudbound recently nabbed four Oscar nominations, but director Dee Rees isn’t waiting for the ceremony in two weeks before she starts planning her next project. According to Variety, Rees is set to adapt Joan Didion’s 1996 political thriller The Last Thing He Wanted, with Anne Hathaway currently in talks to star. As Variety’s report explains, The Last Thing He Wanted is a “thrilling story of one woman, alone and unrelenting in a race against time,” which tells us absolutely nothing, but the article later adds that it’s about a “hardscrabble journalist” who “finds herself on dangerous ground as the Iran Contra Affair’s arms for drugs plot reaches its tipping point.”

That makes it sound like it will emphasize the “political” side of the political thriller genre, which is always fun in today’s climate. The script comes from Marco Villalobos, but that, Dee Rees directing, and Anne Hathaway (maybe) starring are the only things we know about this project so far.
