At last, Rick And Morty reveals Mr. Poopybutthole's backstory
Though he wasn’t introduced until season two’s “Total Rickall,” Mr. Poopybutthole quickly endeared himself to Rick And Morty fans. Not much is known about the top hat-wearing, shorts-clad, ooh-weeing character, other than the fact that Rick trusts him for some reason. Oh, and he was shot by Beth, leading to the use of painkillers we saw after the shocking conclusion of “The Wedding Squanchers,” when he also advised patience ahead of the third season of the show. Mr. Poopybutthole was right about the protracted wait, as season three didn’t arrive until April 2017. But creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland set things right with what might be the best season of the show so far, which of course is just whetting the appetite for new adventures.
Who knows how long we’ll have to wait for that, but in the interim, Adult Swim has shared this video of Mr. Poopybutthole’s backstory, and holy shit, is it an emotional ride. We see the first blush of romance in high school, followed by (college?) graduation, civil unrest, and a wedding (turns out, Mr. Poopybutthole is Jewish). Tragedy strikes after the Poopybuttholes move in together, but then there’s the joyous birth of Baby Poopybutthole. Just as we brace ourselves for the worst, we see Mr. Poopybutthole set down his photo album to join his family—without the use of his cane, thankyouverymuch, Beth—for dinner. The clip is a great palate cleanser for this day/week/month/year, which means we’ve already watched it five times.
