Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake seem to be fighting again
The two singers have both thrown shots at each other after Spears seemed to apologize to Timberlake for things she wrote in her memoir
Well, that didn’t last long! Earlier this week, Britney Spears appeared to broker a tentative truce in her years-long war with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake, as she unselfishly apologized for “some of the things I wrote about in my book” (i.e. that Timberlake convinced her to get an abortion and it was “one of the most agonizing things” she’d ever experienced) and praised his new track “Selfish” after vengeful stans trolled him by charting a 13-year-old Britney bonus track with the same name over the single. She made it so easy for him to just continue on his pithy little “please like me again” press tour and maybe move down from public enemy number one to public enemy number five or so. But Justin Timberlake—of exposing Janet Jackson live on stage facing none of the consequences fame—was never going to do that. Justin Timberlake has to be edgy.
At a show celebrating his 43rd birthday in New York Wednesday night, Timberlake looked for a second like he was about to return Britney’s apology with one of his own. “I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize,” he began, before launching into “Cry Me A River” (via People). So far so good! “To absolutely fucking nobody.” Hey, Justin? You’re 43 years old. Most people grow out of that kind of behavior in grade school. That’s just a little note to incorporate if you don’t want to have to slink back to *NSYNC all over again. You don’t have to thank us.
Spears, of course, was not about to take any of this lying down. In typical Britney fashion, the “Toxic” singer posted a somewhat inscrutable but also fairly direct post on Instagram today, seemingly retracting her previous apology. “Someone told me someone was talking shit about me on the streets !!!” she wrote next to a photo of the moon behind a basketball hoop. “Do you want to bring it to the court or will you go home crying to your mom like you did last time ??? I’m not sorry !!!”
While both got good shots in, we’re obviously calling this particular round of sparring for Britney. Not only is it really lame to bring up a decades-old feud with your ex-girlfriend at the same show where your current wife brought you a whole birthday cake, but Britney also managed to drop a whole new bit of lore into the conversation. When did Justin go home crying to his mom? Why? Seems this war is far from over.
