Celebrate the weirdness of video games with one last Metal Gear Solid V trailer

For decades, video game fans could count on Konami to bring a totally crazy Metal Gear Solid trailer to E3 almost every year. Even for people who don’t care about the series, it’s the sort of thing you have no choice but to be at least tangentially aware of. This year’s E3 is no different, and Microsoft showed off a reliably bizarre trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain during its big press conference. However, this trailer—and Metal Gear Solid V in general—is a little bittersweet. Something is happening behind the scenes at Konami, and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima will almost certainly be leaving the company once this game is finally out the door, so that means we may never see this particular brand of crazy ever again. It really is the end of an era that was just as exciting as it was confusing.

But let’s not think about that now. Let’s just hold this trailer really tight and treasure all of the weird things that happen in it. Like, what’s the point of all of these dramatic voiceovers? Do they really have anything to do with a stealth game about rogue mercenaries and giant robots? Also, who are these invisible people? Does the camera really need to hang on that one woman’s chest like that? And is that a giant hand floating in the air? Honestly, we don’t care if any of that makes sense. We’re just glad to see Kojima doing weird stuff in a Metal Gear Solid game one last time.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be available for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 on September 1, and it’ll hit PC on September 15.
