Cher has filed for conservatorship of her youngest son, Elijah Blue Allman, amid his alleged ongoing struggle with substance abuse and mental health issues. According to documents filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court (via People), the 77-year-old singer is seeking to be the sole conservator of her 47-year-old son’s estate because he is “substantially unable to manage his financial resources.”

A conservator is “urgently needed… to protect Elijah’s property from loss or injury,” the filing states, as he is “currently unable to manage his assets due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues.”

The document continues: “Elijah is entitled to regular distributions from the Trust, but given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues, [Cher] is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself and putting Elijah’s life at risk.” The filing also states that Allman’s ex-wife, Marieangela King, is not an appropriate choice for his conservator because “their tumultuous relationship has been marked by a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises.”

Cher has “worked tirelessly to get Elijah into treatment and get him the help he needs,” the filing concludes. The “Believe” singer “loves Elijah immensely and has always acted with his best interests in mind… [she is] unable to discuss his preferences concerning the appointment of a temporary conservator” due to his “current mental and physical health issues.”

This filing follows reports that Cher allegedly hired four men to kidnap Allman as he attempted to reconcile with his estranged wife last year. While King and Allman filed for divorce in 2021, they allegedly spent 12 days in a hotel room together in 2022, during which the incident occurred—specifically on November 30, the day of their wedding anniversary (per Rolling Stone).

“I was told by one of the four men who took him that they were hired by petitioner’s mother,” King stated in the court documents, which were filed in early December 2022. “Since August 2022, I have been told that I am not allowed to see or speak to [Allman] who is currently in lockdown at a treatment facility that is undisclosed to me. I am also told [Allman] has no access to his phone… I understand his family’s efforts to make sure he is well, and I want what is best for my husband.”

Cher has thoroughly denied these allegations. At the time, she did tell People that she wasn’t “suffering from any problem that millions of people in the United States aren’t,” in reference to supporting Allman through his years-long struggle with addiction. “I’m a mother,” she continued. “This is my job—one way or another, to try to help my children. You do anything for your children. Whenever you can help them, you just do it because that’s what being a mother is. But it’s joy, even with heartache—mostly, when you think of your children, you just smile and you love them, and you try to be there for them.”
