Choose your own wacky adventure in this You Are Deadpool #1 exclusive

Given how many Deadpool miniseries there have been over the years, it’s surprising that it’s taken so long for the fourth-wall-breaking mercenary to star in a choose-your-own adventure comic. These stories require a lot of organization because the story structure is so complex, but writer Al Ewing has proven time and again that he can triumph when given difficult challenges. Ewing teams up with the art team of Salva Espin and colorist GURU-eFX for the weekly You Are Deadpool miniseries running through May, and all those fans who want to put themselves in Wade Wilson’s boots after seeing Deadpool 2 should check out this new interactive comic.

This exclusive preview of next week’s You Are Deadpool #1 shows how Ewing handles the tutorial section, and in the first few pages, Ewing giving readers the opportunity to send Deadpool into a time paradox or have writer Kieron Gillen stab him with a sandwich. The timing of the comedy changes with the panel-jumping conceit, but that Deadpool voice is aggressive throughout, and Ewing’s experience writing the character in books like U.S.Avengers and Rocket has prepared him for a bigger Deadpool project. Espin and GURU-eFX have extensive experience working on this character, and they have highlight the cartoonish elements of the character, visually distancing him from reality to heighten the humor. The pacing of this preview is especially smooth, setting a rhythm for the adventure that will drastically change as the reader makes new decisions.
