Courteney Cox also shares tribute to Matthew Perry: "He was funny and he was kind"
Courteney Cox joined Matt LeBlanc in posting an individual tribute to their late Friends co-star Matthew Perry
Following a post from Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox has now shared her own tribute to Matthew Perry. The Friends star died on October 29, after which his co-stars shared a joint statement that they were “going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.” The cast shared, “In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”
Two weeks later, and after attending the actor’s memorial in person, the legendary Friends have begun to share their own individual remembrances. Cox and Perry shared one of the most beloved friends-to-lovers arcs on television with their characters Monica and Chandler. The duo first slept together at Ross’ (David Schwimmer) ill-fated wedding in London, a hook up which blossomed into a true relationship and ultimately a marriage. On Instagram, Cox shared a video of the first time the pair were seen in bed together from the London episode—both what actually aired on TV and a behind-the-scenes blooper where Cox turned to Perry and joked, “Your turn!” As Perry pantomimed getting back under the covers, Cox laughed, “We’re kidding! He told me to say it, he did!”
“I am so grateful for every moment I had with you Matty and I miss you every day,” Cox captioned the clip. “When you work with someone as closely as I did with Matthew, there are thousands of moments I wish I could share. For now here’s one of my favorites. To give a little backstory, Chandler and Monica were supposed to have a one night fling in London. But because of the audience’s reaction, it became the beginning of their love story. In this scene, before we started rolling, he whispered a funny line for me to say. He often did things like that. He was funny and he was kind.”
Monica and Chandler’s love story was a critical part of the later seasons of Friends, and an integral part of the characters’ evolution. Following his death, one guest star claimed that Perry petitioned the writers to change a storyline where Chandler was unfaithful because he said “the audience would never forgive [Chandler] for cheating on Monica,” an accurate reflection of the fans’ devotion to the couple and a touching suggestion that he was just as invested in that on-screen relationship as the rest of us.
