Dacre Montgomery’s uninhibited Stranger Things audition tape shows he was born to play Billy
Even though the character he plays is pretty horrible, it’s safe to say that Dacre Montgomery is a runaway hit as Billy, Hawkins, Indiana’s newest bad boy (take a seat, Steve) in the second season of Stranger Things. He really doesn’t have that many pre-Stranger Things credits—except for playing the Red Ranger in the recent Power Rangers movie. So presumably, when it came time to audition for Billy on the popular Netflix series, Montgomery was prepared to give the tryout all he had.
And did he ever. Entertainment Weekly posted Montgomery’s audition tape today, and while he looks miles better without his wiry mullet, it’s clear that Billy is the role Montgomery was born to play. Channeling Kiefer Sutherland to deliver some scary Stand By Me dialogue? Not a problem. Previewing his future conversation with Max as he almost runs down her friends with his car? No sweat. But best of all, Montgomery is so committed to the show (and its ’80s-specific soundtrack) that he is ready to dance with wild abandon to the likes of Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Duran Duran. You may never hear “Hungry Like The Wolf” in quite the same way ever again.
