Dan Fogelman is up to his This Is Us tricks in Life Itself teaser

His NBC drama might have just wrapped its second season, but This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman is still planning to deliver more emotionally devastating drama in 2018. To wit—the first teaser for his Amazon Studios film, Life Itself, which stars Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas, Mandy Patinkin, Olivia Cooke, and more.

Judging from the preview, Fogelman still has plenty of timeline-jumping, hot dad-showcasing tricks up his sleeve. Wilde and Isaac play a couple of college kids who seem destined for each other, and eventually have a kid together. Annette Bening appears to be a therapist who’s helping Isaac’s character cope with some tragedy—which is almost certainly the death of Wilde’s character, given the focus on their daughter during a car crash—while Banderas is an older, but also hot bearded guy living in Spain (possibly in the past). There’s no Crockpot or noticeable prosthetics, but Life Itself has shades of This Is Us. All it needs is a Super Bowl-themed memorial. But if the title sounds familiar, it’s because of that great Roger Ebert documentary from 2014.

Life Itself unfolds September 21.
