Dare we get excited about a rumored Grand Theft Auto VI announcement?
Ahead of the company’s 25th anniversary, grumblings of a big announcement regarding a long-awaited video game have reached the internet
Ah shit, here we go again.
Bloomberg reports that Rockstar Games is gearing up to announce a release date for Grand Theft Auto VI as early as this week. This means, any day now, we could wake up to the news that Grand Theft Auto V is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch. However, if Bloomberg’s reporting is correct, we could see a trailer for GTA VI next month.
Of course, rumors about the next Grand Theft Auto game have swirled around the internet since 2013, when the fifth installment in the series came out. Since then, every time the words Grant Theft Auto trend online, people assume that a release date has been announced. Well, it wasn’t, but maybe, very soon, it will. Rockstar promised it “will properly introduce you to this next game when it is ready,” which is so like them.
We do know that the game exists because hackers leaked hours of footage from the game last year. Still in development, the game footage became the subject of criticism from gamers desperate for clout who think an unfinished game is fair game for critique. One of the two British teens charged was convicted of the hack over the summer; the other was deemed unfit to stand trial.
Last year, we learned that Grand Theft Auto would feature its first playable female character. But before YouTubers could go off and post open-mouthed selfies expressing their shock, we also learned that Rockstar was grinding its employees to the bone with 100-hour-week crunch sessions to finish their expansive games. Information outside of “female character” has been sparse because the game has yet to be formally announced. We’ve heard rumors that it would take place in a “fictionalized Miami,” which sounds a lot like Vice City—as in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
But we’re not buying our ticket to Vice City yet. We’ll wait for Rockstar to actually announce the game first.
