Maybe David Leitch could direct the new Jurassic Park movie? How would we feel about that?

Late last month, the world was mildly surprised to hear that Universal was developing a “complete reboot” of the Jurassic Park series with original screenwriter David Koepp that wouldn’t have any of the Jurassic Park or Jurassic World stars returning. It’s weird, because Jurassic World Dominion just came out in 2022 and wasn’t totally liked, but those movies all printed money for Universal so it would be silly to not just constantly make them forever—and here we are, doing just that.

Anyway, Deadline says that Universal is in “early days on the negotiation front” with director David Leitch to take on the franchise’s second reboot (what’s bigger than a Jurassic World? A Jurassic Universe?). The film is supposed to come out next year, though, so those negotiations better start moving.

Leitch seems like the perfect choice for this gig on paper, if only because Hollywood keeps insisting on teeing him up for what should be easy blockbuster slam dunks (if we may mix our sports metaphors a bit). He is, of course, the other guy who worked on John Wick, which led to him making the Wick-esque Atomic Blonde, then Deadpool 2 (which was good!), then Hobbs & Shaw (which was not!), then Bullet Train (which has its defenders!), and later this year he’ll have The Fall Guy (which at least had a fun trailer!). So, when another seemingly easy blockbuster slam dunk comes along, Leitch’s name has to be somewhere near the top of the list.

Those parentheticals suggest that he’s not infallible, so we don’t know if this is a good idea from a critical sense, but we can see the logic in it. Next we have to address the matter of how to reboot Jurassic Park in a way that is consistent with the franchise so far but hasn’t been done already, and the answer is probably… space? Dinosaurs with helmets, floating in zero-g, flapping their little arms to try and “swim” toward some prey?
