Diana

Sympathetically capturing the heartbreak of having her entire private life exposed for all to see, here is Diana, a movie in which Princess Di’s entire private life is exposed for all to see. Naomi Watts plays Diana, drawing on her own understanding of being blonde and famous, and—while she lets the piano do all the melodramatic talking in this trailer—she does effectively capture what it’s like to be blonde and famous, as well as sort of sad about that. The film focuses on Diana’s post-royalty, “people’s princess,” humanitarian years, and even more narrowly on the love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan she had before meeting Dodi Fayed, in what will probably be one of the final, foreshadowing-heavy scenes. Interestingly, it hails from Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel, giving hope that Diana will spawn a similarly hilarious “Princess Di Reacts” meme where she just sort of smiles wanly into the distance, surrounded by people but knowing she is always, always alone.
