Disney takes an axe to its Jack And The Beanstalk movie

In a rare backpedal for the animation giant, Disney has announced that it’s canceling plans for Gigantic, an animated adaptation of the old Jack And The Beanstalk story. Announced at 2015's D23 expo, the film was set to be directed by Inside Out co-writer Meg LeFauve, making her directorial debut with some musical help from Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

Variety reports that Disney Animation Studios president Ed Catmull issued a statement about the cancellation earlier today, writing, “Sometimes, no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it, we find that it just isn’t working. With Gigantic, we’ve come to that point, and although it’s a difficult decision, we are ending active development for now.” Set in Spain, the film was a new IP for the studio; its upcoming releases include Pixar’s new film, Coco, and sequels to Wreck-it Ralph and Frozen.
