Donald Glover confirms existence of Community movie script

Obligatory “six seasons and a movie” update: the Community movie has a script. For a while now, the stars have been uncertain as to what’s going on with the project, but it seems we’re one important step closer to getting the study group back on our screens. News of this progress comes from none other than Donald Glover, who shared what little he knows of the situation on the red carpet for his new series Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

“I was told that the script—literally, I was texting today—I was told that the script was done,” the multihyphenate told Entertainment Tonight. “I haven’t read it yet, but I was told it was done, so it’s really just a schedule thing. I’m in, I’m all in.”

The last time Glover addressed Peacock’s Community movie was in April 2023, and at the time he believed they were “supposed to be shooting it soon.” (Then came a couple Hollywood strikes, and, well, you know the rest.) Speaking with GQ, Glover called showrunner Dan Harmon a “story expert,” but “sometimes we wouldn’t get the scripts until the day of” shooting. He suspected that with the film’s script, “in true Dan fashion, we’ll probably get it on the first day.”

But Harmon himself said he’s changed his ways in that regard. “I don’t want these now-superstar people, like Emmy-winning Donald Glover, who are bothering to gather out of loyalty to this thing, to come back and once again be getting blue pages run down by an intern that totally contradict what they spent all night memorizing,” the writer told The Hollywood Reporter. “I want to have a veneer of, ‘Here’s your reward.’ I don’t want them to go, like, ‘Oh, he’s learned nothing, he’s treating us like cattle again.’”

Though details are generally still sparse, Joel McHale expressed his belief that the movie would shoot in summer 2024. Sounds like Glover will be in for a pleasant surprise with Harmon’s new approach to screenwriting!
