Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are very unsettling in the Kinds Of Kindness trailer
The good kind of unsettling, to be clear. Also: Dogs driving a car!
Perhaps the most discomforting movie trailer we’ve ever seen that also contains a very silly shot of dogs all driving a car, the new promo for Yorgos Lanthimos’ new anthology film Kinds Of Kindness has now arrived on the internet. A cinematic short story collection anchored by Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, and Lanthimos’ Poor Things and The Favourite star Emma Stone (accompanied by Hunter Schaeffer, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamoudou Athie), the film got strong, if slightly concerned, reviews out of Cannes, where Plemons took home the best acting trophy.
Set to the tune of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams,” the new trailer for Kinds Of Kindness doesn’t take a lot of care to make its viewers any kind of comfortable, jumping rapidly between the film’s three stories, which see Dafoe, Stone, and Plemons explore various fucked-up permutations of the concept of human connection. The images that emerge—Stone dancing her ass off in a brown pantsuit, Chau licking someone’s body, and, yes, the dogs—are all fascinating and eye-catching, but the big reveal might be just how well Plemons fits into this world. Kinds Of Kindness reunites Lanthimos with co-writer Efthimis Filippou (with whom he wrote the really weird ones, like The Lobster and The Killing Of A Sacred Deer) and Plemons unsurprisingly reveals himself as a perfect vehicle for their “Aliens in human suits hoping you don’t notice” style of writing dialogue.
Kinds Of Kindness arrives in theaters on June 28.
