The noxious social and cultural soup that created a modern entertainment industry where powerful men can sexually harass and assault women without consequence? Well, here’s Harvey Weinstein getting slapped in a restaurant.
Shared by TMZ, the above clip is taken from an encounter in Scottsdale, Arizona. A fellow restaurant guest makes clear that, rather than asking for a picture together as may have been the case this time last year, Weinstein’s public is now more interested in letting him know that he’s “a piece of shit” and giving him little slaps on his bearded jowls. (To be clear, according to the original story, the man who did the slapping did first ask for a picture, then went back to drinking before finally delivering the fateful slap.)
It’s not an intensely violent run-in. The two back-handed taps are just a sign of what people think of the former Miramax producer—an indication that maybe dining out in public is no longer a super good idea for the man whose monstrous behavior toward women has lead to the film industry’s ongoing, deeply necessary upheaval.
The man, quick to add “Fucking with those women, get the fuck outta here” after slapping Weinstein, hasn’t solved any problem. But he does serve as a sign that, as novel as this may be, men who have damaged so many women’s lives might now have to face ongoing social consequences for doing so. Go get ‘em, Slappy.
