Ewan McGregor reiterates that he'd be "happy" to play Obi-Wan Kenobi again
As the years go on and the wounds left by the coarseness of sand begin to heal, more and more people are looking back on the Star Wars prequels with increasing fondness. Whether they’ve convinced themselves that Jar Jar was actually good or just that the lightsaber fights were pretty entertaining, everyone with any appreciation for prequels can agree on one thing: Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi was great. He brought a bit of winking playfulness to the overwhelming melodrama of the series, suggesting that living in the Star Wars universe would actually be pretty cool if you’re not a whiny Jedi-in-training.
It’s no wonder, then, that McGregor’s Obi-Wan is one of the few things that Star Wars fans hope Disney will resurrect from the prequels for one of its many spin-off movies. At last night’s Golden Globes, McGregor—who won a trophy for his work on Fargo—once again noted that he’d “be happy” to play Obi-Wan Kenobi again, adding that there has been “a lot of talk” about that happening. Unfortunately, he says he doesn’t know any more about an Obi-Wan movie than anyone else does, implying that the “talk” he’s heard is just from random Star Wars fans and not, say, Kathleen Kennedy herself.
In August, we reported that Stephen Daldry (of The Hours and Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close) was supposedly talking to Disney and Lucasfilm about developing a standalone Obi-Wan movie, but nothing official has come out of that just yet—including whether or not this hypothetical movie would star McGregor. He did already make a one-line vocal cameo in The Force Awakens during Rey’s vision, though, so we do know that Disney at least has his phone number.
