Gambit

Though it's a remake of a 1966 Michael Caine/Shirley MacLaine comedy directed by Michael Hoffman, Gambit certainly feels a lot like the signature work of its screenwriters, the Coen Brothers. Specifically, the Coen Brothers who wrote comedies like The Ladykillers, Intolerable Cruelty, and Burn After Reading, full of wacky, elaborate con games perpetrated by people with hideous accents. Cameron Diaz represents for the lattermost, her cowgirl drawl competing with the blaring funk-rock soundtrack and explainer-guy voiceover for the most in-your-face element of a preview that also includes Colin Firth losing his pants on a hotel ledge, a roaring lion, and Alan Rickman's balls. Anyway, there's certainly a lot of loud energy behind these shenanigans, as Firth ropes in Diaz's cowgirl for a scheme that involves stealing a painting from Rickman, and then Stanley Tucci shows up to do his looking-over-his-glasses thing. You might want to turn the volume down a little before watching.
