Before we heard about Jared Leto blinding himself to keep it real, the most fraught report out of the Blade Runner 2049 production involved Ryan Gosling getting decked by once-and-future Deckard, Harrison Ford. Apparently, Ford struck Gosling by accident but only after successfully simulating many other blows, so the famously fuck-free actor didn’t see what the big deal was. He did think it warranted sharing some—but not all–of his scotch with Gosling, who related this story to GQ last year, thereby helping to disseminate possibly the most Harrison Ford of Harrison Ford anecdotes. (“That hurt,” Gosling said. “I know,” Ford smirked.)
Now, in a profile on Ford, GQ raises the issue of that punch once more, asking the actor to give his side of the story. His explanation is very matter of fact: “I punched Ryan Gosling in the face. Ryan Gosling’s face was where it should not have been.” Ford expands on the description, telling GQ it was Gosling’s responsibility as an actor to “be out of the range of the punch. My job was also to make sure that I pulled the punch. But we were moving, and the camera was moving, so I had to be aware of the angle to the camera to make the punch look good. You know, I threw about a hundred punches in the shooting of it, and I only hit him once.”
Ford cops to the incident being 10 percent his fault and 90 percent Gosling’s. As for why the split of the scotch wasn’t proportional, he grouses: “What—did he fucking expect the whole bottle? You know, I figured one drink would fix it. That was enough.” But look, tolerating his co-star’s lack of professionalism aside, Gosling “was fun to work with. I like him a lot. He’s a smart guy. I mean, he’s a fucking Mouseketeer—he’s been doing this since he was 6 years old or something. He knows what he’s doing.”
