HBO adds a third season to House Of The Dragon
Game Of Thrones’ most existing spin-off is getting a third season before its second airs
In news that doesn’t require a raven or a network of little birds to figure out, HBO has ordered another season of House Of The Dragon. Given that House Of The Dragon’s second season premieres this weekend, and the renewal news imbues the upcoming batch of episodes about to air with a bit of confidence for the network. HBO is telling its audiences they’re so confident that this will satisfy viewers that they’re already beginning work on another one. Additionally, it’s HBO’s premier show, the big one. Of course they’re bringing it back even if it turns out that everyone has lost interest, which seems very unlikely.
What is surprising is that HBO didn’t announce the next two seasons, considering we already know they’re in the works. Last December, Martin wrote on his blog that he spent a few days working with House Of The Dragon’s writers on seasons three and four, which he described as “lively, fun discussions.” Unfortunately, because Martin’s mythos relies heavily on mystery, time jumps, and surprise, we have no idea what the third season will be about or who will star in it. Furthermore, if we’re to believe Martin, and why shouldn’t we, those first two episodes of House Of The Dragon are killers, so maybe some familiar faces won’t be returning. He writes:
I am hardly objective when talking about anything based on my own work… but I have to say, I thought both episodes were just great. (And they are not even finished yet). Dark, mind you. Very dark. They may make you cry. (I did not cry myself, but one of my friends did). Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart rending. Just the sort of thing I like. (What can I say? I was weaned on Shakespeare, and love the tragedies and history plays best of all).
Who will survive, and what will be left of them? Only one way to find out. House Of The Dragon premiers on June 16 on HBO and Max.
