Here are the winners of the 69th Emmy Awards
Last year’s Emmy Awards got political, with Jill Soloway exhorting the audience to “topple the patriarchy” and some people who aren’t white men actually winning awards. And that was before Donald Trump won the election and made everything political. This year, Stephen Colbert set an odd, Jimmy-Fallon-rumpling-Trump’s-hair sort of tone by having Sean Spicer come out during the opening monologue when Melissa McCarthy was right there in the audience, a move that stood out in a show otherwise steadfast in its dedication to dunking on Trump.
The expected slew of awards for Saturday Night Live and Veep aside, the ceremony contained a few surprises—like Riz Ahmed’s win against Robert DeNiro in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category—and a few historic milestones. Lena Waithe became the first black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Writing, and Donald Glover the first black person to win an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Other big winners tonight include The Handmaid’s Tale, Big Little Lies, Black Mirror: “San Junipero”, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, Sterling K. Brown’s funny, heartfelt (and sadly cut short) acceptance speech, Oprah’s unparalleled announcing skills, no one clapping at Roger Ailes in the In Memoriam segment, and Ann fucking Dowd.
A full list of winners from tonight’s telecast is below, and you can catch up with The A.V. Club’s Emmys liveblog here. Winners are listed in bold.
