As we approach the longest night of the year, Netflix is preparing to both give and take away. Eleven seasons of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia will be ritually plunged into the digital void in December—alongside Nightcrawler, Young Frankenstein, Amores Perros, Waking Life, The Queen Of Versailles, and All I Want For Christmas, which seems like an odd choice given the season—but, on the other hand, the streaming service will also spare cynical city folk from having to watch Jeff Dunham: Arguing With Myself with their relatives by removing it just before Christmas. Truly, Netflix is a benevolent overlord.
Or maybe not, given that its idea of a Christmas present is the risky proposition of pairing David Ayer and Max Landis in its original movie Bright, starring Will Smith as a fantasy cop who’s racist towards orcs and Joel Edgerton as his orc partner. Netflix appears to be hoping for a Suicide Squad-sized hit—and bracing for a Suicide Squad-esque reception—by posting music videos from soundtrack artists Bastille, Machine Gun Kelly, X Ambassadors, and Bebe Rexha more than a month before Bright’s release while conveniently withholding the actual film’s release date until after most critics’ end-of-year lists are published.
But while Netflix is shoving Fuller House’s treacly non-delights and Fun Mom Dinner—which isn’t very fun, but does have a mom dinner—down our throats in December, the month also brings us the streaming debut of Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 2, as well as new comedy specials from Dave Chappelle, Todd Barry, Judd Apatow, Craig Ferguson, and Russell Howard and the premieres of new seasons of The Crown and Easy.
