After saying, pretty publicly, that he would only come back for a third Sonic The Hedgehog movie “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see,” Jim Carrey has now apparently recanted (or maybe the angels just delivered): Variety reports that the allegedly “retired” Carrey will appear in the franchise’s third film, much to the likely relief of parents planetwide.

Because here’s a secret known only to those who’ve weathered—for reasons of parenthood, nostalgia, or sheer, unmitigated boredom—both of Sony’s extant Sonic films: They’re actually kind of funny, when the CGI rats aren’t on screen.

(No shade intended here toward voice performers Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, and especially Ben Schwartz, by the way, who all do everything in their power to liven things up while their various digital homunculi wander the screen; it’s just that there’s only so much you can do with the most “movie for children” elements of these movies for children.)

Looking at the human cast list for the movies, you can kind of see why this might be: When you’ve got comedians like Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell kicking around in the back of your movie, making the most of their screen time, it’s inevitable for something funny to occasionally make it through the filters. And Carrey is the most prominent part of that equation, acting with his whole goddamn body in each of the current Sonic movies, having a ton of fun performing alongside henchman Lee Majdoub, and, basically, giving non-children in the audience someone to look at while the computers do their thing. We know Sonic 3 is going to feature video game franchise anti-hero Shadow The Hedgehog, which is huge news for anyone who can’t achieve personal fulfillment without seeing a CGI hedgehog hold a gun. But for the rest of us, Carrey’s return, teased this week on social media, drags our expectations up from “Ugh” to “Fine.” High praise, indeed!
