John Mulaney to hang around Los Angeles with funny friends for live Netflix project
John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's In LA will stream live on Netflix for six nights starting May 6
John Mulaney has earned a lot of latitude over at Netflix, as evidenced by following up a traditional stand-up hour with a bizarre (though beloved) children’s variety special. His next project with the streamer has an even more hand-wavey premise: “Let’s just hang around Los Angeles, and whoever’s around can join us!” Such is John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In LA, the six-episode special airing live starting May 6 during the Netflix is a Joke fest.
According to the logline for the show, “Six live installments of a show where John Mulaney explores the city of Los Angeles during a week when every funny person is in it.” The trailer, which appears to feature regular ol’ Angelenos, promises that the special will feature guests “equal to, but not necessarily” Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, and David Letterman. (“No one is confirmed yet, but a lot of people are in play. Everyone who passed did it in a nice, very funny way.”) What sets this apart from a Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee or a My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman (in which Mulaney will appear on April 30) is that it’s as much about the city itself as the funny guests; there will also be music and conversations with “local LA county officials.”
It’s a bit unconventional to announce a six-episode special about hanging out with comedians without confirming any of those comedians’ involvement, but Mulaney is well-loved in his community, so no doubt he’ll be able to book a week’s worth of guests. And everybody from the comedy community is in Los Angeles during that period: the Netflix is a Joke festival, which takes place from May 6 to May 12, features over 400 artists performing at more than 500 shows. Some of the comics involved include Jon Stewart, Ali Wong, Arsenio Hall, Brett Goldstein, Chelsea Handler, Conan O’Brien, Fred Armisen, Jenny Slate, Kevin Hart, Kumail Nanjiani, Leslie Jones, Maria Bamford, Marlon Wayans, Maya Rudolph, Mike Birbiglia, Nate Bargatze, Nick Offerman, Patton Oswalt, Rachel Bloom, Ramy Youssef, Richard Kind, Sarah Silverman, Seth Rogen, Tim Robinson, Trevor Noah, and Nick Kroll (who will almost certainly be featured, being Mulaney’s longtime pal and comedy partner). And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
Mulaney’s spent much of his comedy career as a New York guy—his special Kid Gorgeous was filmed at Radio City Music Hall—so a Los Angeles special is a change of pace. In addition to doing the live-streamed series (which he will co-showrun alongside Ashley Edens, with Dave Ferguson as head writer), Mulaney will also be part of the Big Mouth Live At The Greek show as well as his own solo show, John Mulaney: In Concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
