John Mulaney's ex-wife, Anna Marie Tendler, is releasing a memoir of her "heartbreak and rage"
Upcoming memoir Men Have Called Her Crazy is about "mental health as well as the insidious ways men impact the lives of women"
We try our best, ’round these parts, not to label artists and creators strictly on the basis of who their spouses or former spouses are—even when the significant others in question are objectively more famous to the wider world than the artist in question. But given that writer, makeup artist, photographer, and designer Anna Marie Tendler’s upcoming memoir, Men Have Called Her Crazy, is explicitly about, in part, “the endless source of my heartbreak and rage—men”—and given that the most famous man in Tendler’s life over the last decade has been her ex-husband, stand-up comedian John Mulaney—it’s kind of hard not to view news of the book’s upcoming publication in that light.
This is per Tendler’s Instagram, where she revealed the cover for the book, along with news that Simon and Schuster will be publishing it in August of 2024. Here’s her brief description of its contents:
I have been writing this book for two years. More accurately though I have been writing it for close to four decades. I have never been more proud of any work. It is a story about mental health; about being a woman; about family. And finally, about the endless source of my heartbreak and rage—men.
Tendler and Mulaney were married from 2014 until early 2022—the last year of which encompassed both a very high-profile rehab stint for Mulaney (covered in detail in his most recent stand-up special, Baby J), and a stay in a psychiatric hospital for Tendler (as noted in the longer description of Men Have Called Her Crazy on Simon And Schuster’s site). In addition to books on makeup and hair styling, Tendler published an essay in Elle last year saying goodbye to her French bulldog Petunia—who, like Tendler herself, was a frequent fixture of Mulaney’s stand-up.
Men Have Called Her Crazy comes out on August 13.
