Jude Law joins Captain Marvel as a "mentor" character
According to Variety, Jude Law is in talks to play the male lead in Marvel’s Captain Marvel. Brie Larson is already starring as Carol Danvers, the marvelous captain herself, with Ben Mendolsohn playing the (presumably Skrull) villain. Variety says that Law’s role is being kept under wraps, but he’ll apparently be a “mentor of sorts” who helps Danvers learn how to use her new super powers when her DNA gets fused with an alien’s after some kind of space accident. That description seems to imply that he’ll be playing a version of Mar-Vell, the alien dude who originally used the name Captain Marvel in the comics until he died of cancer in the ‘80s (because stuff gets pretty real in the comics from time to time).
The most recent draft of the Captain Marvel script was written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, and the film will be directed by Anna Bode and Ryan Fleck. It’s set to come out on March 8, 2019.
It’s worth noting that this will be Law’s highly anticipated return to movies with “Captain” in the title, coming about 13 years after the release of his last “Captain” movie, Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow. It has also probably been years since anyone referenced Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow, so the fact that its full name has appeared twice in this one paragraph is probably pretty cool for Jude Law.
