Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder to play assholes at a wedding

Unlike their more recent roles, in which she played a delightful weirdo and he played a taciturn weirdo who also was capable of murdering you, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves will have to stretch their dramatic chops a bit for their next acting gigs, venturing into territory less in line with their actual personas. Variety reports the two have signed up to star in Destination Wedding, a romantic comedy from former Mad About You writer and director of the similarly sitcom-esque indie 5 to 7, Victor Levin.

The movie casts the actors as “two miserable and unpleasant wedding guests who develop a mutual affection despite themselves over the course of the weekend event.” Left unsaid in that description is whether they’re miserable because some obnoxious friends forced them to pony up thousands of dollars just so the engaged couple could live out their dream of being married while surrounded by a tower of West African giraffes on the Niger plains, or whatever. This will mark the third big-screen collaboration for the two actors, who previously teamed up for Richard Linklater’s very entertaining A Scanner Darkly and Francis Ford Coppola’s very something-or-other, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The film has already completed production, though no release date has been announced.
