Lakeith Stanfield moves on up in Sorry To Bother You trailer
The sci-fi satire of Sorry To Bother You shook many a Sundance attendee, and now the trailer is making the rounds with the hoi polloi who have to wait until summer to see it in theaters.
Atlanta’s Lakeith Stanfield stars as Cassius “Cash” Green, a young man who discovers the secret to telemarketing success is sounding like a white guy—in this case, David Cross. Soon, his impression of a chipper suburbanite sends him shooting up the corporate ladder, where he’s met by Steve Lift (Armie Hammer), a coke-snorting CEO who appends his multimillion-dollar offers with smiley faces. As Cassius turns up with all sorts of buttoned-up types, his on-again, off-again girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson) remains unimpressed by his cashing in on code-switching.
That synopsis is far more straightforward than the actual film, which sees The Coup co-founder Boots Riley make his directorial debut. There’s also all manner of drug-induced hallucinations that give way to some delightfully fucked-up imagery (including centaurs hanging dong). Written by Riley, Sorry To Bother You will make its polite and auspicious debut on July 6.
