Lil Dicky has put Dave on "hiatus" at FXX

FX announced tonight that the comedy series won't be moving forward with a fourth season any time soon.

Fans of David Andrew Burd’s FXX comedy series Dave—which follows the successful comedian and rapper both in and out of his Lil Dicky stage persona—will need to resign themselves to not seeing it again for a minute (or, possibly, ever). Variety reports tonight that the series has been put on “hiatus” at its home network, which is basically TV-making code for “We don’t feel like making another season of this television show right, but we reserve the right to begin making it again at a later date.”

Dave has been a somewhat surprising critical success across its three seasons, telling a fictionalized version of Burd’s rising success in the musical world. (In the real one, his career exploded in 2013 after the music video for his song “Ex-Boyfriend” went viral on YouTube.) The series co-stars rapper GaTa as a similarly made-up version of himself, working as a rapper, hype man, and producer, and most recently aired new episodes last year. Set within a slightly more deranged version of the Hollywood music scene, the series was never shy about bolstering its heightened reality with a big-name celebrity cameo or a dozen; Justin Bieber, Kevin Hart, Lil Nas X, and Drake all appeared on the show at various points. (As did Brad Pitt, as part of his ongoing campaign to convince the world that he’s a funny guy who enjoys sending up his own image.)

FX issued a statement today that pretty clearly put the reasoning for the break on Burd himself, writing that, “After some back and forth, there are no current plans for a fourth season of Dave right now, as Dave Burd has decided to take an extended break to focus on music and other ventures. That does not rule out the possibility of doing something in the future. We love the show and sincerely appreciate the creative excellence Dave, Jeff Schaffer, the cast and crew delivered with every episode. We are excited that our partnership with Dave will continue as he develops future projects for us through his overall production deal with FXP.”
