Michael Mann reportedly has eyes on a project after Heat 2
Mann's most recent film Ferrari premieres December 25
Michael Mann is trading cars for crime in his next project, an adaptation of popular South Korean thriller Veteran.
This comes via Variety, which reports that the project is still in the development phase, and Mann hasn’t yet decided whether he’ll actually direct, or take more of a backseat as a writer and producer. The Ferrari director is currently working with CJ ENM, Korea’s leading film and TV conglomerate, to get the project off the ground. “We are developing a script with Michael Mann, but his role and our schedule are not fixed yet,” a CJ ENM rep told the trade.
Per an official Netflix logline, the original 2015 crime thriller follows “a maverick detective” whose “crime-fighting skills are tested when he targets the ruthless heir to a corrupt corporation and crime syndicate.” The film was a massive hit in South Korea, grossing $92 million domestically and a worldwide total of $94 million, per Box Office Mojo. According to Variety, Mann’s vision for his adaptation sees the story moving from South Korea to an undecided (as of yet) U.S. City.

Still, due to the ongoing actors strike and the director’s full plate, the wait for Veteran might be pretty lengthy. Per Deadline, Mann has confirmed that his next project will be Heat 2, a revisiting of his Robert De Niro-starring 1995 thriller. “Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari. It did very well. I plan to shoot that next,” he said of the film. He also teased that Ferrari star Adam Driver was in talks to play a young version of De Niro’s character Neil McAuley from the original film. “Adam and I got along like a house on fire [on Ferrari]. We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other, and we had a great time working together artistically.”
