Mistaken For Strangers

As we first reported last month, in addition to a new album, Trouble Will Find Me, due out May 21, The National is also releasing the tour documentary Mistaken For Strangers, directed by the band’s roadie—and frontman Matt Berninger’s brother—Tom. Judging by the trailer, Tom’s video account of the High Violet tour, though framed as a standard tour doc, is mostly about the friction between Tom and everyone else, seeing as Tom isn’t exactly a tour professional, and he’s seen here asking increasingly awkward questions of the band members. Berninger has said Mistaken originated as a mockumentary, and he’s also been upfront about it not being a “pure documentary,” in the sense that at least some of it has been “crafted” in order to tell a story about Tom’s failed stint as assistant tour manager. Whatever you want to call it, it premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival this Wednesday.
