MTV aims low, lands on Floribama Shore for new reality series
To be fair to MTV, lazy and cynical peans to the lowest common denominator are, more often than not, wildly successful ratings-wise. But even by those standards, the Florida panhandle (which extends all the way to Alabama, thus the name) seems like a rather obvious and culturally played-out place to search for rubbernecking material, thanks to the Florida Man phenomenon on Twitter, Reddit, and a million lazy social-media jokes. Still, MTV’s new reality series Floribama Shore will attempt to squeeze just a little bit more juice from that particular concept by following “eight Southern kids who come to spend the summer in the hottest beach town on the Gulf Coast, Panama City Beach, to party it up and put the real world on hold for just a little bit longer.”
As TVline points out, Floribama Shore is the newest in a series of regionally-focused MTV reality shows created in the wake of Jersey Shore which also includes Geordie Shore (U.K.), Gandia Shore (Spain), Warsaw Shore (Poland), and Acapulco Shore (Mexico). MTV’s next “shore” thing (sorry, couldn’t help it) debuts on MTV on Monday, November 27.
