The modern Doctor Who seems to go through repeated cycles of “Fun!’ and “Not so much,” over the years, ramping up and down between “Isn’t my time machine neat?” and “You know, it’s actually pretty hard to be an immortal war criminal.” With its latest transformation, though, the series seems to be embracing its “Fun!” roots harder than ever, with the new trailer for Ncuti Gatwa’s upcoming first full season as the fifteenth Doctor promising a lot of light-hearted, highly energetic adventures.

SEASON 1 TRAILER | Doctor Who

Set to the strains of David Bowie’s “Changes”—on the nose, but no one ever went broke by ditching subtlety in the “picking the music for your TV trailer” game—the trailer sees Gatwa’s Doctor and Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday running off through time, hitting the club, stomping on butterflies, etc. With Gatwa’s grinning charisma the obvious focal point, the trailer promises a return to the Doctor’s more giddy side, bouncing through all of time and space as a big, beautiful playground.

(It all makes a certain sense, given the way the character was introduced: Split off from David Tennant’s short-lived return engagement as the 14th Doctor last year, Gatwa’s character arc was initially described as being about getting the Doctor’s head on straight after year after year of trauma.)

But enough of that serious stuff: We’re clearly here for fun times, completely with Bridgerton references, people turning into lizards, and a reminder that there’s no such thing as monsters (except for things that are really, very clearly monsters). The whole thing is carried along ably by Gatwa, who’s promising to be one hell of a tour guide across time and relative dimensions in space.

Doctor Who’s latest season debuts on May 10 on Disney+.
