Netflix unveils new projects from David Fincher, Zack Snyder, and many more in 2023 film slate
There are 49 new films coming from Netflix in 2023
Netflix has laid out its film programming for 2023, with new features from David Fincher (The Killer), Zack Snyder (Rebel Moon), David Yates (Pain Hustlers), Sam Esmail (Leave The World Behind). With 49 films set for release this year, you can expect almost one major film a week from the production company/streamer.
“It’s vintage Fincher, just from the title alone it’s right in the lane that you want to see him in,” Netflix’s Ori Marmur tells Variety of The Killer, starring Michael Fassbender. “I don’t want to give too much away. I don’t want David to come in and kill me.”
Another major release coming in at the end of 2023 is Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, starring Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Bae Doona, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins.
“Zack came in with so much passion,” Marmur says. “This is a film that he’s had in mind for decades. As you know, he’s spent so much time working on other people’s IP at other studios. We worked with him on Army Of The Dead and we did things that others couldn’t do.”
“With Rebel Moon, he wanted to push the envelope again,” he continues. “When we saw how big the world he created was, we thought it would be better served as two pieces versus one film. It’s the kind of story that can continue to grow. He thinks of it as his take on making something like Star Wars.”
Netflix kicked off its 2023 film slate with the release of Dog Gone, a Rob Lowe-led film about a man searching for his beloved missing dog, Gonker. Gonker! Also arriving in January are the Korean sci-fi thriller JUNG_E, from Train To Busan’s Yeon Sang-ho, as well as the star-studded You People, featuring Jonah Hill, Lauren London, David Duchovny, Nia Long, Sam Jay, Elliott Gould, Molly Gordon, Rhea Perlman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Eddie Murphy.
The streamer has several projects from its regular actors releasing this year, including Gal Gadot (Heart Of Stone), Adam Sandler, and Millie Bobby Brown. Sandler’s fruitful deal with Netflix continues with the release of Murder Mystery 2 (starring Jennifer Aniston), Leo, and Spaceman. Stepping out of Stranger Things, Brown will lead Damsel as a young woman who finds herself recruited as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt owed by her prince-to-be’s family.
In the realm of the rom-com, Netflix has the forthcoming Your Place Or Mine, starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, as well as A Family Affair, featuring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and Joey King. There’s so much more going on this year, with Dev Patel’s directorial debut (Monkey Man), and films starring Chris Evans, David Harbour, Idris Elba, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, Gabrielle Union, John Boyega, Julia Roberts, Haley Lu Richardson, just to name a few.
Not to mention, there are several expected 2023 features that have not received official release dates—the most important of those being the Chicken Run sequel, Dawn Of The Nugget. Yes, there are also the Bradley Cooper-helmed Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro and Wes Anderson’s adaptation of a few Roald Dahl stories, but those pale in comparison to Dawn Of The Nugget. Nick Park has returned to direct the long-awaited follow-up film, which stars Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi, Imelda Staunton, and The Last Of Us’ Bella Ramsey.
Here’s the full rundown of Netflix’s 2023 film roster, via Deadline:
