Some parents offer support through positive affirmation. A simple “Good game, sport,” or “Great work, kiddo,” can really help keep any young person from the devil’s temptations. Positive reinforcement builds confidence, and confidence creates success. That’s the American way, but it’s not the way of Patrick Warburton’s parents. The parents of Joe Swanson do not subscribe to that New Age feel-goodery. Celebrating the show’s 25th Anniversary with the rest of the cast at the Paley Center, Patrick Warburton let it be known that no one hates Family Guy more than his own flesh and blood. That hate has only grown in the quarter century since its premiere. “They hate the show even more today than they did 25 years ago.”

Warburton tells the crowd that they have a different moral compass than that of Seth MacFarlane’s whacky world of cutaway gags and giant chickens. His father spent three months in a monastery and “almost became a monk.” His mother, who belonged to the American Television Council, used to go “around the neighborhood when I was 13 years old passing out pamphlets on the sins of masturbation.” While a member of the American Television Council, Mrs. Warburton and her fellow Council members also attempted to get the show canceled. Ironically, Warburton’s Family Guy money supported his parents, leading Warburton to accuse his mother of “laundering money” to herself.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the gallons of haterade being drunk by the Warburtons. In 2013, the actor sat down for a “Random Roles” with The A.V. Club, revealing that he has “two parents—honest to God—that couldn’t be more disappointed that I’m on this show.” Ultimately, it doesn’t matter because he’s done apologizing for Family Guy.
