Paramount+’s Wolf Pack transforms into canceled TV show
The Teen Wolf spin-off, Wolf Pack, will not return for season two
A full moon rises. A wolf howls. A single-season television show transforms into nothing.
Wolf Pack, the Teen Wolf spin-off starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, has been canceled by Paramount+, putting a silver bullet in the show after just one season. Per The Hollywood Reporter, this is another casualty of the studios allowing the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes to go on for months. Delays caused by the work stoppages, which could’ve been avoided entirely had the AMPTP caved earlier and given both unions a fair deal, meant a second season wouldn’t be ready until 2025. Waiting that long for the next full moon was too much for Paramount, so they scrapped the show.
Wolf Pack premiered in January last year on Paramount+ to positive notices from the streamer. Sarah Michelle Gellar, an executive producer on the show, told the Hollywood Reporter that they planned on doing another season, reporting “great” numbers. A month after its premiere, The Wrap reported The Wolf Pack was TV’s most “in-demand” show, so Gellar had reason to be “hopeful” but didn’t have a guarantee. There is no cure for lycanthropy or studio whims.
Despite our excitement for Sarah Michelle Gellar to return to spooky teen dramas, Wolf Pack left much to be desired. In her review for the A.V. Club of the premiere, Lauren Coates writes:
What’s frustrating about Wolf Pack’s lack of substance is that with the cancelation of Legacies, the ending of Stranger Things, and Riverdale coming to a close all within a year of each other, there’s a prime spot for the taking as far as supernatural teen dramas. If ever there was a time for Wolf Pack, a gritty show adapted from a book series that stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, it’s now. But as much as the cards are stacked in Wolf Pack’s favor, at least over its first two episodes, this just isn’t a project with enough bite.
