Priscilla Presley says Sofia Coppola’s depiction of her life is “right on”
Coppola's Priscilla portrays the complicated relationship and marriage between Elvis and Priscilla Presley
It perhaps shouldn’t be news that the subject of a biopic signed off on a director’s vision of their own life, but in the wake of exploitative productions like Pam & Tommy and even Blonde, it’s nice to know that a film really did its homework. Luckily for subject, director, and audience alike, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla fits into that latter category—at least according to Priscilla Presley herself.
“I was very concerned about this movie,” Presley shared at a recent Q&A session for the film, before praising the finished product: “I think it’s right on, to be honest with you.” (via People). The film isn’t simply inspired by Presley’s life and relationship with the late Elvis. It’s directly based on her 1985 memoir, Elvis and Me, so this is high—and essential—praise.
“I love her filmmaking. I think she does a great job. She is for women, and when she approached me about doing a movie about me, I was moved by it,” Presley, who went on to become an executive producer on the film, continued. “If anyone were to do a movie, it would be for her. I would never support another movie from anyone else doing it.” (For the record, Priscilla did seem to approve of Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 depiction of the Elvis story. “It is a true story told brilliantly and creatively that only Baz, in his unique artistic way, could have delivered,” she wrote of the film in a post on her Facebook page last year.)
“She really connected with me. I have no problems with what she did in any way,” Presley concluded.
Unfortunately, not everyone in the Presley family agreed with Priscilla. Earlier this month, it was reported that her daughter, Lisa Marie, had sent Coppola a series of emails deriding the film’s script before her death earlier this year. “My father only comes across as a predator and manipulative. As his daughter, I don’t read this and see any of my father in this character. I don’t read this and see my mother’s perspective of my father,” she wrote. “I read this and see your shockingly vengeful and contemptuous perspective…”
“I hope that when you see the final film you will feel differently, and understand I’m taking great care in honoring your mother, while also presenting your father with sensitivity and complexity,” Coppola responded at the time. While we can’t know whether or not Lisa Marie would have come around on the final edit, it’s nice to know that at least one member of the Presley family agrees with Coppola’s statements.
