Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ The Killer score also comes out this week
The new film by David Fincher comes with a side of Reznor and Ross
The added benefit of a new film by David Fincher is a new score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. 2023’s The Killer is no exception. Amid the carefully selected Smiths tracks that make up the titular assassin’s playlist, a spate of new compositions by Reznor and Ross provide the tempo that Fincher’s globe-hopping, sardonic thriller moves its feet to. We’ll all be able to move to Reznor and Ross’ latest this week. Netflix confirms that on Friday, November 10, Reznor’s label, The Null Corporation, will release the score in tandem with the film’s streaming debut.
The Killer marks the fifth collaboration between Fincher and Reznor and Ross. Beginning with The Social Network, the duo’s Oscar-winning first score together, Reznor and Ross have produced music for every one of Fincher’s movies, including Gone Girl, Mank, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. More recently, they scored Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem earlier this year. It’s the perfect companion piece to The Killer’s unflinching, almost routine approach to brutal violence and murder for hire.
However, any Smiths fans expecting an original soundtrack bursting with Morrisey’s cheeky baritone will likely be disappointed. None of the Smiths tracks used in the film will appear on the soundtrack. Haven’t Smiths fans suffered enough?
“Trent and Atticus are our first call, and if they choose to return the call, I deem myself lucky,” Fincher said during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival (via Indiewire). “The Smiths were a post-production addition because I knew I wanted to use ‘How Soon is Now?’ and I love the idea of that song specifically as a tool for assuaging his anxiety. I liked it as a meditation tape, I thought it was amusing and funny.”
Per Netflix, the streamer will publish a playlist of the film’s tracks on Spotify, which, in addition to “This Charming Man” and “How Soon Is Now,” features songs by Portishead and rapper Avalanche The Architect.
