Rob Zombie is making a follow-up to his last decent movie
It’s been 12 years since Rob Zombie got his blood-covered movie-making pals together to make The Devil’s Rejects, easily his best film as a director to date. Now, Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Zombie has been making some fresh noises about bringing back the film’s murderous Firefly Family, despite the fact that TDR seems to end with its surviving members going out in a blaze of suitably nihilistic glory.
Of course, bringing back a bunch of carnival sideshow murder fans is as easy as adding a few lines to the script; it’ll be a lot more challenging to see if Zombie’s younger, more artistically ambitious self can be brought back for the movie, too. More to the point, it’s hard not to wonder if the guy who lazily tossed 31 into the world last year is even capable of making a worthy follow-up to The Devil’s Rejects, a movie that succeeds largely on the delicate line it walks between over-the-top camp and outright, finger-clenching horror. Zombie clearly has a lot of affection left for the Firefly clan and its various deranged members—enough to bring them back from the presumed dead, anyway. We can only hope that reconnecting with his favorite band of murderous weirdos will get him back in the proper horror groove.
