Room 237

Much as the actual documentary is all about recontextualizing familiar images, Rodney Ascher’s Room 237—which aims to uncover all the hidden meanings supposedly buried in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining—cleverly recreates that film’s trailer, a bit of fair use that echoes the documentary’s never-cleared incorporation of clips from the original. (The little legal disclaimer right up top hopefully puts that to rest.) The IFC Midnight release is due March 29 after becoming a Sundance and TIFF favorite last year, where it intrigued audiences with its exploration of theories that The Shining is really everything from an allegory about the Native American genocide to Kubrick’s admission that he helped fake the moon landing. Just as this trailer is obviously a eulogy for those forgotten thousands who have been mercilessly slaughtered by VCRs. Obviously.
