Judge orders Russell Brand not guilty of indecent assault

The actor has not been fully exonerated, as one of the charges was downgraded and six other charges remain.

Judge orders Russell Brand not guilty of indecent assault

TMZ is reporting that Russell Brand has been found not guilty of one charge in his sexual assault trial. The tabloid says that Judge Joel Bennathan, the presiding judge at London’s Southwark Crown Court, ordered jurors to find the actor not guilty of an “indecent assault” allegation, citing “insufficient evidence.” That specific charge has been downgraded to “attempted indecent assault.” “In respect of count two, I have reached the decision there is insufficient evidence of indecent assault,” the judge reportedly said on Tuesday. “That is my decision, not yours. You will be directed to return a not guilty verdict in count two.”

Brand still faces three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. The “attempted indecent assault” charge involved an incident in 2001 in which Brand allegedly tried to drag an MTV employee into a bathroom at the channel’s offices. Brand says the incident has been “unfavourably [sic] reframed” amid more severe charges brought against him. As of Tuesday morning, the jury assigned to the trial had not yet begun deliberations, though Brand read a prepared statement to the court citing a “promiscuous life” that he has since spent years “openly denouncing.” Brand was baptized as a Christian in the River Thames in 2024, following a Channel 4 expose on the actor’s sexual assault accusations the year prior.
