Selena Gomez is bringing back Wizards Of Waverly Place
Selena Gomez and co-star David Henrie will produce a spin-off of their hit Disney Channel comedy, Wizards Of Waverly Place
Selena Gomez may now be a Golden Globe-nominated comic actor for Only Murders In The Building (and one of the most famous women in the world, besides), but she hasn’t forgotten her Disney Channel roots. “Little did I know that I ended up with everyone I needed to be in my life. I think I felt safe, and that’s a really hard thing for me to feel,” she reflected last year on the Wizards Of Waverly Place podcast hosted by her co-stars Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise. “You guys genuinely loved me, and that’s all I could have asked for, the unconditional trust and bond we had, I miss so much.”
Well, Gomez doesn’t have to miss it anymore: she and her onscreen brother David Henrie are bringing Wizards Of Waverly Place back for a sequel series, according to Deadline. The pair are set to executive produce the show alongside Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, who created That’s So Raven spin-off Raven’s Home. Henrie is also on board as a series regular, and even Gomez will return to guest star in the pilot.
For those unfamiliar with Wizards lore, the original series followed the Russo siblings Alex (Gomez), Justin (Henrie), and Max (Jake T. Austin) as their father (DeLuise) taught them magic, all in preparation for the day they’d have to compete against one another to become the “family wizard.” At the end of the series—spoiler alert!—Alex won the competition, but Justin was appointed the headmaster of the magic school “WizTech” and got to keep his magic, too. (Max, meanwhile, was appointed heir to the family’s sandwich shop.)
According to Deadline, the new series “picks up after a mysterious incident at WizTech, where an adult Justin Russo has left his wizard powers behind, opting for a normal, human life with his wife and two sons. But he gets a surprise when a powerful young wizard in need of training shows up at his door… and Justin must embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World.”
The show has cast Janice LeAnn Brown (Disney’s Just Roll With It) as the aforementioned powerful young wizard Billie, while Alkaio Thiele (Call Me Kat) will play Justin’s oldest son Roman and Mimi Gianopulos (American Princess) will play Justin’s wife Giada. No word yet if Austin, Stone, DeLuise, or Russo matriarch Maria Canals-Barrera will reprise their roles; DeLuise didn’t seem to be in the loop, commenting a clueless “Reboot?” on Henrie’s social media announcement. One way or another, this will definitely give ’em something to talk about on Wizards Of Waverly Pod!
