Sigourney Weaver is in talks to hang out with The Mandalorian & Grogu

How many blockbuster science-fiction franchises can one woman star in?

Sigourney Weaver—considered, by many, to be acting’s preeminent Sigourney—might be about to add yet another Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster franchise to her already considerable resumé. THR reports that Weaver has apparently entered talks to appear in upcoming Star Wars film The Mandalorian & Grogu, marking what would be her first appearance in the Star Wars universe.

Announced earlier this year, The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to be the first Star Wars movie since they stopped making those, with the franchise taking a step back from theaters in the wake of The Rise Of Skywalker. (And a general sense of cinematic exhaustion with the franchise, after diminishing returns from movies like Solo: A Star Wars Story.) Building on the popular Disney+ TV show, and directed by series mastermind Jon Favreau, the film seems to be operating on the basic premise that people like the guy in the mask, they like the little green dude, so presumably they’ll actually bother to go see a movie about them.

As for Weaver, she’s, well, Sigourney Weaver: Alien, Ghostbusters, and most recently Avatar, a series she persists in starring in even though she 100 percent died in that first movie. (Thanks, Eywa!) The only question now is whether the version of her we’ll get in TM&G—provided these talks bear fruit—is “Nice, Wise Sigourney” or “Evil Hardass Sigourney”; fingers crossed for the latter, because the idea of Weaver playing an evil Star Wars gangster or some psychotic Imperial Moff has a lot of potential to it. Weaver’s most recent roles were in The Lost Flowers Of Alice Hart and Avatar: The Way Of Water.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is expected to go into production some time in 2024; the film is currently believed to be aiming for a May 2026 release date.
