Why’d fans have to go and make things so complicated? We see the way they’re actin’ like Avril Lavigne is somebody else and it gets her frustrated.

Tired of a two-decade-long conspiracy theory that singer Avril Lavigne had been replaced by a doppelganger, Lavigne has once again reiterated that it’s not true. She is the only Avril. Lavigne discussed the rumor recently on the Call Her Daddy podcast, where resident daddy Alex Cooper continually prodded the “Sk8er Boi” singer about it. However, proving that even after 20 years in the music industry, Lavigne has a pretty good handle on the thing: “It’s so dumb.”

Per EW,
the rumor stems from Lavigne looking so young for so long. Cooper
herself couldn’t get off the topic in the interview. Lavigne, who is 39
and the best-selling album of the 21st century by a Canadian artist,
doesn’t really seem bothered by it. Because “it could be worse” and
“obviously I am me,” we think.

“It’s just funny to me,“ she said. “Like, on one end, everyone’s like, ‘Oh my God, you look the exact same, you haven’t aged a day!’ Other people are like, ‘There’s a conspiracy theory that I’m not me.’”

These body double conspiracy theories are nothing new. Who could forget the time everyone thought Paul McCartney, the second eldest living Beatle, died in a 1966 car crash, and British intelligence replaced him with a Canadian policeman named William Shears Campbell to spare Beatle fans the grief. The rumor became such a persistent piece of Beatles lore that John Lennon began goofing about it in songs. “Here’s another clue for you all, the walrus was Paul,” he sang. McCartney and Lavigne aren’t the only ones plagued by doppelganger syndrome. Party rocker Andrew W.K., Miley Cyrus, and the world’s biggest star, Taylor Swift, have also been subject to these tales of replacement. When will it end? Weirdly, unlike Lavigne, these theories didn’t arise because the artist looks the same but because they look slightly different. Conspiracy theorists, we humbly ask that you make up your mind.
