Spielberg's next film might be Indiana Jones 5, as if we don't have enough problems
As long as you ignore the opinions of a few outliers, pretty much all of us can agree that Disney has done a good job taking over the Star Wars brand—we’re getting a movie every year, it’s all much more inclusive than it used to be, and all of our lives have been enriched by the existence of Porgs. That being said, even the most delusional optimist must have a little trepidation about Disney resurrecting the Indiana Jones series after the utter horror that was The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. The company and Steven Spielberg have been cruelly threatening to bring Indy back for years, with various updates coming along the way, but a new report suggests that Indiana Jones 5 might actually happen very soon.
This comes from Deadline, which says insider sources believe that Spielberg’s next movie will either be a new Indiana Jones or something quick he can do right before immediately moving on to Indiana Jones. The sources don’t know how quickly this all could go down, so we may still have some blissful months or years before we have to start reflecting on whether Crystal Skull should be excised from the canon or if it really wasn’t as bad as we remember—though it definitely was, so there’s no point in trying to reconsider that.
If we’re all somehow lucky enough to dodge that enormous boulder, though, Deadline says that Spielberg’s next movie might actually be a remake of West Side Story, which is apparently one of his dream projects. Or, Deadline notes that Spielberg could still “fall for another script,” so maybe he won’t end up making either of these possible projects just yet.
