No one thought The Boys would go out before its time. They’ve created a literal monster in Homelander for goodness sake, and that guy is not easy to kill. Just ask every other character on the show.

Still, we’re not sure even Mesmer foresaw that the show would get its fifth season renewal before season four even premiered. The news was announced today at Amazon’s upfront presentation of their upcoming slate. “The Boys could be the best job I’ll ever have. What other show allows me to write about politics, capitalism, family, and exploding genitalia, though not in that order,” said Eric Kripke, the series’ creator (via Variety). “The cast and crew are deeply grateful to Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to tell this story for another season. My only problem is that since this year promises to be free of any conflict or misinformation, we’re not sure what to write about.”

The Boys has always had its finger on the pulse. (Even if you haven’t seen the show, A-Train’s Kendall Jenner-style Pepsi ad is a perfect parody.) But season 3 did get more explicitly MAGA than past outings, with Homelander becoming a right-wing god and an extremely corrupt senator in the mix. In this way, The Boys could conceivably go on, and on, and on. That would definitely be to the detriment of its actual storyline though; Butcher and Homelander can’t keep stalemating forever. At some point, someone has to win. Butcher is clever and tough-as-nails, but Homelander is an atomic bomb in the shape of a human. Eventually, it won’t be believable for him to lose. We’ll see how everything shakes out next season.

Of course, the universe could (and likely will) live on forever in the form of spinoffs and other titles. We’ve already had one season of Gen V (about some new supes’ college years) and an animated series called The Boys Presents: Diabolical in 2022. Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal are also currently working on a new spinoff to be set in Mexico. While The Boys long ago deviated from the original Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson comics on which they were based, there are 72 issues of those and a lot more story on which to peg spinoffs.

The Boys stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit and Cameron Crovetti. Season 4 premieres June 13, with weekly episodes airing until July 18.
